Old NewspaperYou and your group will be creating one issue of The Maycomb Tribune, the newspaper that illustrates what life was like in the town of Maycomb, Alabama. Maycomb is the fictitious setting of To Kill a Mockingbird, modeled after the author’s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama.

Your group’s edition of the Trib will be an issue that could have been published back in the 30s. It should not include articles about what life was like in Maycomb; the articles should report events that occurred, thereby illustrating to your readers what life was like. For example, instead of saying “Maycomb Today Has Too Much Crime,” you might write “Maycomb Crime Streak Continues With Brutal Stabbing.”

Each student in your group is responsible for writing one article for the Trib, in addition to completing one editor’s role. Through reporting typical news occurrences, the articles must thoroughly present the following in detail.

  • Life in Maycomb County in the 30s
  • How the federal government tried to help the country out of the depression
  • Segregation
  • Optional (in addition to the others): Alabama football in the 30s

The editor roles are as follows. Each student must satisfy one role.

  • Content editor – responsible for ensuring that the above content requirements are met.
  • Copy editor – responsible for excellent grammar, spelling, and writing style.
  • Layout editor – responsible for combining the stories into a newspaper/newsletter template.
  • Editor in Chief (can be in addition to other editorship) – responsible for work atmosphere, responsible for helping other editors complete their jobs

Move on to the process.
