Once you have completed you digital story, it will be time to export your iMovie project as a video file. This is your FINAL STEP in creating your digital story. You cannot make changes to the exported file.
NOTE: The directions here are specific for the EAHS grad project digital story. Other projects may have different requirements for how to save and export.
After exporting, you may wish to embed your file into a PowerPoint or Keynote presentation. Click here to skip ahead to that step.
- In the “Share” menu in iMovie, choose “Export using Quicktime …”

- In the “Save As” box that pops up, choose the same settings as in the following example, and follow the “lastname_cc1a_graddst.mov” convention.

Make sure you choose “Movie to QuickTime Movie” and “Broadband – Medium” as your settings. Choose where you want your story to save. Saving directly to your local computer will be faster than saving to a networked drive. - Wait patiently for the number of minutes that iMovie tells you your export will take.
Embedding your digital story
IMPORTANT: BEFORE YOU EMBED, YOU MUST SAVE YOUR DIGITAL STORY .MOV FILE AND YOUR PRESENTATION (.PPT or .ODT FILE) INTO YOUR STUDENT SERVER FOLDER!!!
If your presentation is created in OpenOffice.org Impress …
- You need two identical slides, each with just a title on them, in the correct location for your digital story.
- If your DST is a Why This Career story: insert two identical slides between your title slide and your first career facts slide. The title of your two slides should be “Why _____” with your career of interest in place of the blanks.
- If your DST is a Typical Day story: insert two identical slides between your “Shadow Information” slide and your “Shadow Day Schedule” slide. The title of your two slides should be “A Typical Day.”
- IF your DST is a My Future Plans story: delete the content of your future plans slide, but not the title. On the right side of the OpenOffice.org workspace, click on the layout option for a slide with just a title. Once you have created a slide with just a “Future Plans” title, copy and paste that slide so that you have two identical slides, each titled with “Future Plans,” but with no other content.
- Insert your video onto the second of your identical slides by selecting that slide for editing, and then going to the Insert menu and choosing “Movie and sound.” Choose your .MOV movie file.
- The movie should appear as a dark box with a question mark. Your movie will play when you view your slide show (go ahead, try it out!).
- Hold down shift and drag the corner of the dark box to increase its size. Stop at about 2/3 the size of the entire slide.
If your presentation is created in Microsoft PowerPoint …
- While editing a PowerPoint slide, go to the “Insert” menu and choose “Movies and Sounds >” then “Movie from file …”

- In the pop-up box, navigate through the folders on your computer to find your exported movie. Choose the movie and select the “Choose” button in the bottom right.
- When asked whether or not you want your movie to play automatically, choose “NO.”

- Your movie should now be embedded. View your show, clicking on the movie when the slide appears, to see the result.

If your presentation is created in Apple Keynote …
- While editing your Keynote slide, open the “Insert” menu and select the last item: “Choose …”

- In the pop-up box, navigate through the folders on your computer to find your exported movie. Choose the movie and select the “Insert” button in the bottom right.
- Your movie should be embedded now. It will automatically play when the slide loads. You can edit this in the “Build” Inspector.
- Open the Inspector by clicking on the icon in the top bar.

- The Build Inspector appears when you click on this icon in the top of the Inspector.

- With the movie selected in the Keynote slide editing view, under “Build In” change the “Effect” to “Start Movie.”

- Click “More Options” at the bottom of the Inspector. In the drawer that opens, change the “Start Build” menu to “On Click.”

- Your digital story should be embedded now. Click on “Play” in Keynote to view.

- Open the Inspector by clicking on the icon in the top bar.
