Students also hone their reading strategies in anticipation of PSSAs and SATs next year.

Core Comm. also helps students satisfy a majority of their EASD- and Pennsylvania Department of Education-required graduation project. It includes the following major projects/activities.

  • Mock interview
  • Career shadow
  • Career shadow portfolio
  • Career shadow presentation
  • Digital story

Parents’ Night 11/20

All Core Comm. parents are invited and encouraged to attend Parents’ Night, Thursday, February 11, at 6:30 p.m. I will be available in my classroom during parents’ night to answer questions.

Since the parents’ night schedule asks parents to follow their child’s A-day schedule, if Core Comm. is on your student’s B-day schedule (usually opposite Physical Education or a music class), I would ask that if you have any questions you please stop by during any of the “class periods” that night.

The two major activities we tackle during Core Comm. are the mock job interview and the grad project. Just like passing Core Comm., successful completion of the grad project is a graduation requirement at EAHS. Both activities require students to dress appropriately for professional activities (nicer than jeans, sneakers, and t-shirts). The grad project also requires each student to spend a day shadowing a professional in a career that interests him or her. The shadow experience is the basis for the presentation each student creates and performs for grad project completion.

The dates for these activities are as follows.
2/26 Mock Interview
3/15-3/19 Suggested week for career shadows
4/30 Grad Project Presentations

There is some information on my teacher website at http://adamswriting.com/teaching/core-communications about these activities, but the best way to learn more about these activities is to visit my classroom on parents’ night.

You may also be interested in the edmodo public page links that you’ll find on the above-linked page. This is how you can track your son or daughter’s class activities in Core Comm.

Finally, our course syllabus, including rules and expectations, is posted online at http://tinyurl.com/ccsyllabus.

Thanks for considering this invitation. I hope to see you on parents’ night.
